Driving to Akureyri

After an eight hour flight from Seattle, we arrived in Reykjavik. Soon after, we picked up our rental car and headed north on highway one, which circles the entire island. A strong winter storm had hit Iceland the day before and the roads were iced over with a layer of slush on top. we had a 300+ kilometer drive ahead of us, but after a cappuccino, I felt ready to forge ahead. Our rental car, a small diesel powered Chevrolet hatchback was equipped with studless snow tires, which gripped exceptionally well. The scenery was mouth dropping, but I had to keep my eyes on the road and focus on staying on the road. By the time we reached Akureyri, the second largest city in Iceland situated in the far north, I was exhausted. I had been awake for twenty-four hours and my brain was shutting down. We had made it to our destination, a one bedroom cabin overlooking the fjord Eyjafjörður. The driveway had not been plowed and being sleep deprived, I got us stuck, but at least we were where we needed to be. The car hung on almost two feet of snow and the tires could only spin. We tried to shovel it out with no luck. So, we decided to get some rest instead of worrying about the car. While we were asleep, our driveway was plowed and I was able to shovel the snow from underneath the car this morning. Our cabin is the perfect size and we have been daydreaming about building the same model in Canyon City. It has a living room, a bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen, and a hot pot. A hot pot is like a jacuzzi, but with no jets, and is filled with geothermal spring water. The entire west side of the cabin is exposed by thick glass and the view is surreal. It is so awesome and relaxing, I love it. Our first day here, we had a pleasant breakfast, took a dip in the hot pot, and drove into town for more groceries. I am already very relaxed and am enjoying spending time with my wife who doesn't have to study...
