Gullfoss & Geysir

We started off our day at Gullfoss which is known for two things: the Rift Valley (where a fissure takes place) and it was home to the Icelandic Parliament (pre 870 AD). A Fissure is where the North Atlantic plate diverges with the European plate. This only happens in one other area, East Africa. Usually, plates cross over one another, for you non geology people. I was more intrigued by its social history. Vikings would conduct government, make laws, etc. from the top of the ridge. Men from different regions throughout Iceland would gather here and camp for a few days while deciding laws and playing games like Tug of War and wrestling horses. The leader would stand at the top of the ridge and shout the new legislature. The basalt columns and waterfalls in this area are amazing and when you look out, you can see mountains surrounding you in most directions.
Then we headed to Geysir where we got to see... You guessed it, geysers. On our way home we stopped at a hot pot and soaked our cold bones in warm water. It's important to note that each town has a public pool, spa, and steam room that is supplied by spring water and super geothermal water. They smell of boiled eggs, but it's awesome and relaxing anyways. Another good day in Iceland.
